Course Overview
The Introduction to Occupational Safety and Health course offered by the American Institute of Safety Professionals to give supervisors, managers, and safety staff the basics of OSHA-compliant workplace safety. Focused on OSHA 29 CFR 1910 (General Industry) and 1926 (Construction), participants learn the most important employer obligations under §1926.20 (General Safety and Health Provisions)… to provide safe and precise working conditions and execute safety programs. The course also teaches hazard recognition and assessment, not limited to the physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, and environmental. Emphasis is placed on frequent inspections of the workplace, tools, equipment, and materials maintained by competent persons. Training covers the assurance safety standards on machinery and tools, the tagged, locked-out, or removed from the work area when unsafe, and how to restrict equipment operation to qualified trained personnel. The course covers key OSHA compliance areas such as the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), hazard communication, OSHA recordkeeping, and dimensions of employee training. The course details the OSHA standards that span various worksites, states, and territories, including offshore installations and explains the relationship of specific versus general standards. After completing the course, participants are able to identify, anticipate, and eliminate potential hazards, implement and uphold control measures, deliver systematic training, cultivate a safety proactive culture, and maintain legal OSHA compliance. The training covers a variety of general industry safety and health hazards which a worker may encounter at a work site. Training should emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention, not OSHA standards.
