Course Overview
The Foundations of Safety Leadership Course by the American Institute of Safety Professionals prepares construction industry supervisors, managers, and safety professionals to understand the OSHA Construction Industry Standards, §1926.20, General Safety and Health Provisions, and to begin building the safety culture by assisting collaborators and clients in adopting OSHA Construction Industry Standards. The course outlines the obligation of the contractor to enforce safe workplace practices. No laborer or mechanic should be ordered to work in unsafe, unsanitary, or hazardous conditions. The participants understand the importance of adopting and enforcing safety programs and maintaining job site safety. Competent persons should inspect job sites, and all tools, machines, and safety materials should meet safety requirements. Defective tools and machines should be tagged, locked, or removed. The course outlines the importance of safely operating machines, and to avoid accidents, injuries, and unsafe conditions, it should be limited to qualified employees. Participants understand that OSHA standards apply and may be enforced in any U.S. state, territory, or offshore area and may include multiple worksites. Specific standards apply when the general standards do not. Each employer must comply with the program-specific duties, including providing personal protective equipment (PPE) to each employee exposed to the hazards, as well as delivering adequate hazard training to each employee impacted by the hazard. Noncompliance constitutes distinct violations for each employee. This course enables participants to identify, prevent, and control hazards at the workplace. This includes the enforcement of PPE use, training the staff, and demonstrating leadership in safety compliance. Ultimately, the approach reduces risks for workplace safety, promotes responsibility, and improves safety performance at construction sites. This knowledge enables leaders to achieve the legal safety regulations.

The training covers a variety of general industry safety and health hazards which a worker may encounter at a work site. Training should emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention, not OSHA standards.
