Course Overview
The Silica Dust Safety in Construction course offered through the American Institute of Safety Professionals helps participants safely manage construction site exposure to respirable crystalline silica in accordance to OSHA §1926.1153. This training includes the definitions of competent persons, employee exposures, HEPA filtration, objective data, and the roles of PLHCPs and pulmonary specialists or occupational medicine specialists. Students identify and evaluate respirable crystalline silica hazards and apply effective methods of exposure control that incorporate engineering controls, safe work practices, and respirators that are appropriate for the work being done and materials being used. The course states the OSHA and employer responsibilities to monitor exposure, evaluate and control risks, and take appropriate protective actions to protect workers that include the appropriate PPE and prevention practices. Construction workers and supervisors will avoid silica-related health risks in their work and will meet OSHA and other health and safety regulatory requirements in order to ensure a safe and healthful workplace.

- Introduction to Silica Dust Safety in Construction: Overview of silica dust and its hazards in construction environments, importance of silica dust safety in construction
- Understanding Silica Dust: Properties and characteristics of silica dust, the health effects of silica dust exposure, OSHA regulations regarding silica dust exposure
- Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment: Techniques for identifying and assessing silica dust hazards in construction environments,evaluation of the potential consequences of silica dust exposure
- Control Measures: Engineering controls to reduce silica dust exposure, work practices to reduce silica dust exposure, personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and its proper use
- Respiratory Protection: Identifying the need for respiratory protection, selection, fit-testing, and maintenance of respiratory protection equipment, proper use and care of respirators
- Housekeeping and Clean-Up: Proper cleaning methods to reduce silica dust exposure,procedures for disposing of silica-containing materials
- Training and Communication: Importance of safety training for workers on silica dust hazards, communication of silica dust safety policies and procedures, employee engagement and feedback
- Compliance and Recordkeeping: Compliance with OSHA and other regulatory bodies, safety audits and inspections, record-keeping and reporting requirements
- Emergency Preparedness and Response: Identification and management of emergency situations related to silica dust exposure, emergency response procedures and emergency response teams, first aid and emergency medical services
Entry Requirements
This program follows global workplace health and safety standards, and is taught by industry experts. Successful students receive an American Institute of Safety Professionals accredited certificate which is recognized by several employers and regulatory bodies.

Examination
Candidates can take this exam through an assigned portal from the American Institute of Safety Professionals. A passing score is 70% or higher, and exam results are provided right after by email to the address provided.
The exam is open-book, allowing candidates to validate their answers. Any candidates who do not pass have 1 month after their exam to go through the training materials and can take the exam 3 additional times.
