Course Overview
The Silica Dust Safety in Construction course offered through the American Institute of Safety Professionals helps participants safely manage construction site exposure to respirable crystalline silica in accordance to OSHA §1926.1153. This training includes the definitions of competent persons, employee exposures, HEPA filtration, objective data, and the roles of PLHCPs and pulmonary specialists or occupational medicine specialists. Students identify and evaluate respirable crystalline silica hazards and apply effective methods of exposure control that incorporate engineering controls, safe work practices, and respirators that are appropriate for the work being done and materials being used. The course states the OSHA and employer responsibilities to monitor exposure, evaluate and control risks, and take appropriate protective actions to protect workers that include the appropriate PPE and prevention practices. Construction workers and supervisors will avoid silica-related health risks in their work and will meet OSHA and other health and safety regulatory requirements in order to ensure a safe and healthful workplace.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing the Silica Dust Safety in Construction course, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the health risks associated with silica dust exposure, including silicosis, lung cancer, and other respiratory diseases.
  • Identify sources of silica dust on construction sites and recognize high-risk activities.
  • Apply control measures to minimize silica dust exposure, including engineering controls, administrative procedures, and work practice modifications.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE), such as respirators, correctly to protect against silica dust inhalation.
  • Implement safe handling, cutting, grinding, and drilling techniques to reduce dust generation.
  • Monitor and assess workplace exposure levels to ensure compliance with occupational exposure limits and regulations.
  • Develop and follow silica dust management plans as part of the site safety program.
  • Train workers on the hazards of silica dust and safe work practices to prevent exposure.
  • Respond effectively to emergencies or incidents involving high silica dust exposure.
  • Integrate silica dust safety measures into overall construction site health and safety management systems.
Mode of Delivery
Participants will receive online training through Microsoft Teams and LMS. Courses are offered by accredited broadcasters and backed by expert instruction and official study materials. All assessments are conducted online and successful participants are awarded certificates that are accepted internationally.
