Course Overview
The Introduction to OSHA course offered by the American Institute of Safety Professionals helps learners understand the basic elements of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (29 U.S.C. 651 et seq.). Known as the Williams-Steiger Act, the course offers an understanding of the objectives, scope, and the OSHA enforcement model explaining the collaborative role employers and employees have in providing a safe and healthful workplace. Employees have the legal obligation to comply with safety work practices, while employers are to provide a workplace free from hazards that could cause death or serious injury. The training conveys the authority of the U.S. Department of Labor to conduct workplace inspections, issue citations and propose penalties for failure to comply with workplace safety regulations, the role of the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission (OSHRC) in adjudicating violations and the authority of the employers and employees to contest citations or seek judicial review. The course provides a practical understanding of varying OSHA policies that are implemented to facilitate the improvement of organizational safety culture with the help of real-world case studies and examples. At the end of this program, participants will recognize the purpose of OSHA, how it is enforced, and how compliance helps mitigate workplace dangers, thus promoting OSHA-compliant workplaces that are safer and more productive in every industry.
