Course Overview
A course on Registered Industrial Hygienist (RIH), provided by the American Institute of Safety Professionals, surveys industrial hygiene from the perspective of OSHA (29 CFR 1910 Subpart Z: Toxic and Hazardous Substances), ACGIH TLVs, and NIOSH RELs. The course enables participants to foresee, identify, assess and manage hazards of the workplace environment which might include harmful chemicals, physical, biological and ergonomic factors compromising the health of the employee. The students will have the ability to perform exposure assessments, air sampling, noise assessments, biological assessments, and apply the risk assessment and control frameworks of the hierarchy of controls to the design, administrative, and PPE levels. The course covers control of occupational exposure through engineering and administrative controls and safe use of PPE. Course participants will understand the management of industrial hygiene, hazard and communication and the auditing of regulations and compliance at all levels to control the federal, state, and local exposure. Using case studies, students will develop skills in hazard exposure assessments and modeling, surveillance of the workplace, and incident investigations and corrective action planning. At the end of the program, RIH-certified professionals can perform the following: develop and execute complete industrial hygiene plans, perform health risk evaluations, and advise organizations on the legal, safe, and healthy maintenance of workplaces. This level of certification improves one’s capacity to safeguard the health of workers and protect organizations from the risks of noncompliance to legislation on occupational health and safety and develop a positive attitude toward the culture of safety and health across the industrial, manufacturing, and service sectors.
