Course Overview
The Registered Hazardous Materials Professional RHMP course offered by the American Institute of Safety Professionals prepares students for responsible hazardous materials management in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 (HAZWOPER), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines, United States Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Materials Regulations 49 CFR Parts 100–199 and international documents such as the GHS. Students learn how hazardous materials should be handled, stored, conveyed and disposed of, and how to eliminate, to the greatest extent possible, the dangers posed to workers, the public, and the environment. Participants learn how to identify risks and gauge the degree of chemical container compatibility, label, manage overflow, and containers and materials, and control and minimize spills, and determine emergency response and waste to be minimized, in addition to hazmat emergency response plan outlines. The course teaches the evaluation of hazardous exposure situations and the development of engineered, administrative, and personal protective control measures to eliminate acute and chronic hazards. Students apply OSHA, EPA, and DOT standards in practical skills related to the response, decontamination, and protection of the environment during case studies, hands-on exercises and scenario-based simulations. Students learn how to design safe corporate systems that integrate emergency response, transportation, and compliance audit-related documentation to manage hazardous materials and hazards during transportation. This course equips professionals to manage hazardous materials programs, perform risk assessments, execute risk mitigation plans, ensure compliance with regulations, and maintain workplace safeness and environmental sustainability, while also building an industrial, laboratory, transport, emergency response proactive safety culture.

Participants will receive online training through Microsoft Teams and LMS. Courses are offered by accredited broadcasters and backed by expert instruction and official study materials. All assessments are conducted online and successful participants are awarded certificates that are accepted internationally.

  • Introduction to Safety Committees: Purpose and role of safety committees, types of safety committees, composition and membership of safety committees.
  • Safety Committee Meetings and Functions: Planning and conducting effective safety committee meetings, agenda development and meeting preparation, recording and documenting meeting minutes.
  • Hazard Identification and Assessment: Techniques for identifying hazards, risk assessment and control measures, reviewing and evaluating incident reports.
  • Incident Investigation and Reporting: Root cause analysis, incident reporting and documentation, implementation of corrective actions.
  • Safety Training and Education: Identifying training needs, developing and delivering training programs, evaluating the effectiveness of training.
  • Safety Communication and Employee Involvement: Communicating safety information and policies, Employee participation and involvement, Building a positive safety culture.
  • Compliance and Auditing: Compliance with OSH laws and regulations, auditing of the safety management system, preparing for external audits and inspections.
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response: Development of emergency response plans, emergency drills and exercises, handling of emergency situations.
  • Continual Improvement: Continual assessment of the safety committee's performance, implementation of improvements, measurement of the effectiveness of the committee.

Entry Requirements
This program follows global workplace health and safety standards, and is taught by industry experts. Successful students receive an American Institute of Safety Professionals accredited certificate which is recognized by several employers and regulatory bodies. Graduates receive a master certificate, course completion certificate (if applicable), an official transcript, a wallet card, and access to a professional safety network which promotes ongoing learning and career growth.
Program Duration
The program is designed to offer flexible online learning with a minimum instructional contact time of 8 hours. Most learners successfully complete the course within one month, allowing them to progress at their own pace while balancing professional commitments.
Examination
Candidates can take this exam through an assigned portal from the American Institute of Safety Professionals. A passing score is 70% or higher, and exam results are provided right after by email to the address provided. The exam is open-book, allowing candidates to validate their answers. Any candidates who do not pass have 1 month after their exam to go through the training materials and can take the exam 3 additional times.
