Course Overview
The Lifting Inspector course by the American Institute of Safety Professionals is designed for supervisors, safety professionals, and competent persons to understand OSHA regulations proficiency on safe lifting operations (29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC - Cranes and Derricks in Construction and §1926.251 - Rigging Equipment for Material Handling). Participants learn to inspect cranes, hoists, slings, shackles, hooks, and other rigging components to identify signs of wear, deformation, corrosion, and safety defects. This lesson underscores the responsibility of the employer to safety maintain and operation equipment, train qualified personnel, and control hazards to prevent suspended load accidents. Attendees learn practical skills for pre-use inspections, inspection documentation, enforcement of corrective actions, and tagging, removing, or repairing defective equipment to ensure it is not operational. The course addresses safe lifting, load handling, rigging techniques, and environmental factors that affect lifting operations, such as wind, load stability and safe distance to power lines, as stated in §1926.1400 - Cranes and Derricks Safety.
Safety measures are followed concerning load capacities, signaling, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep workers safe from crushing, falling, and striking hazards and ensure personal safety. Once the course is completed, the proactive identification and control of lifting hazards, as well as the maintenance of equipment and the structured inspection programs, build a strong culture of accountability, proactive hazard control, and compliance with regulations that improve safety and productivity for construction site operations.

Entry Requirements

Graduates receive a master certificate, course completion certificate (if applicable), an official transcript, a wallet card, and access to a professional safety network which promotes ongoing learning and career growth.
Program Duration
The program is designed to offer flexible online learning with a minimum instructional contact time of 8 hours. Most learners successfully complete the course within one month, allowing them to progress at their own pace while balancing professional commitments.
Examination
Candidates can take this exam through an assigned portal from the American Institute of Safety Professionals. A passing score is 70% or higher, and exam results are provided right after by email to the address provided.
The exam is open-book, allowing candidates to validate their answers. Any candidates who do not pass have 1 month after their exam to go through the training materials and can take the exam 3 additional times.

The training covers a variety of general industry safety and health hazards which a worker may encounter at a work site. Training should emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention, not OSHA standards.
