Course Overview
The Laboratory Safety course offered by the American Institute of Safety Professionals gives an in-depth understanding of OSHA regulations and best practices while working safely in a laboratory. Special emphasis is on the safe use, handling, and storage of hazardous chemicals as per §1910.1450 and other related standards. The course introduces key foundational concepts for laboratory safety such as employees, hazardous chemicals, health hazards, physical hazards, reproductive toxins, mutagens, select carcinogens, and laboratory-scale operations. Focus is also placed on the engineering controls that were practiced, such as laboratory-type hoods, protective practices and equipment that were designed in the laboratory to reduce the exposure of the possessor to the harmful chemicals and other factors that were hazardous. The course covers principles of laboratory use of hazardous chemicals and covers the multiple chemical procedures that were performed at a laboratory scale, other non-production activities, and protective means that were to be made available. Understanding implementation of medical consultation procedures after significant exposures and other roles of employees, supervisors, and Chemical Hygiene Officers helps make a safe working environment. The course also covers hazard identification, risk assessment, and emergency preparedness strategies. Learners understand how to manage protective measures against hazardous chemicals, lower risks from workplace exposure, and determin safety protocols to operate a laboratory safely due to exposure to practical examples, testimony, and compliance notes. Participants are capable to implement all the safety measures described, comply to the standards by OSHA, and develop a responsible, safety-wise, aware, and proactive climate in the laboratory by the program's completion.
