Course Overview
The Fundamentals of Adult Learning and Instructional Design - Train The Trainer course offered by the American Institute of Safety Professionals helps one understand adult education and instructional design underpinnings so that trainers focus on developing effective learning experiences that can be delivered according to workable standards. The course material is based on the principles of self-directed learning, experiential learning, and the problem-solving approach advanced by Malcolm Knowles and is a reiteration of his Andragogy. Knowles (1984) emphasized the unique characteristics of adult learners as one of the differences, and primarily because adult learners bring their previous learning to the context, thus demanding relevance. Course learners are trained to employ Kolb’s (1984) Experiential Learning Theory to design creative hands-on tasks that learners can simulate and practice; thus, aiding transfer of learning. The course also utilizes Bloom’s Taxonomy to devise learning goals that are measurable and reflect the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that are to be achieved to meet the expected outcomes of the workplace. This course also utilizes OSHA provisions, specifically 29 CFR 1910.1200, Hazard Communication, and Lockout/Tagout. The course also emphasized the systematic training design based on the Stella/ISO 21001:2018 and ANSI/IACET standards. The training also included a needs assessment, determining the sequence of the content, delivery mode, learner engagement, and evaluation. Educational research shows that active learning techniques such as case studies, role-playing, and problem-based learning increase adult learners' engagement and knowledge retention (Prince, 2004; Freeman et al., 2014). Trainers can use evaluation methods such as formative and summative assessments and the Kirkpatrick Four-Level Model to gauge the effectiveness of learning interventions (Kirkpatrick & Kirkpatrick, 2006). After completing the course, participants are able to design, implement, and evaluate training programs that improve professional competence, workplace safety, and organizational effectiveness while meeting legal, educational, and qualitative requirements.

Mode of Delivery

Training sessions will be conducted through Microsoft Team Meetings in an online format, or through LMS or face-to-face delivery. Invitations for the meeting will be distributed one day before the commencement of the training program. Training is either delivered by an accredited training provider or an affiliate training center.

Program Duration

This course is designed to help you reach your goals at your own pace and on your schedule. Instructional contact time must be a minimum of 8 hours. Most students intend to complete their studies via online learning within 1 month.

Examination

All students must achieve a minimum 70% score to successfully pass the examination which shall be taken online through AISP assigned portal. After successful completion of the examination, students will get their results immediately on their registered emails. This is an open-book exam and students are permitted to use a separate browser window to review course content while taking the exam. If you do not pass the examination you may retake the examination. Students are allowed to take an exam three times within one month. During this time, students should review the course material to improve their understanding.
