Course Overview
The Aviation and Defense Safety course offered by the American Institute of Safety Professionals focusing on the domain of safety principles and practices, understanding and managing risk in the civil and defense aviation sectors, and the legal aspects of aviation safety. The course aligns with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations (14 CFR Parts 21, 25, 27, 135) and the safety and defense aviation standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annexes, the Department of Defense (DoD) safety regulations, providing the fundamentals for aviation safety, airworthy aircraft, and safety of personnel during aviation operations. The course provides students with the principles and techniques of hazard and risk management, the development and implementation of proactive safety management systems (SMS) in accordance with ICAO Safety Management System standards, ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety, and the Defense Safety Oversight regulations. It also emphasizes the importance of aviation safety human factors: incident, accident, and operational risk management; crew rest regulations; and safety culture. The program evaluates defense and aviation accident case studies, focusing on risk management, root cause reporting, and lessons learned to guide enhanced risk management. It also studies OSHA 29 CFR 1910 standards for emergency preparedness, ground operations, aircraft maintenance safety, and defense facility security to aviation safety and emergency defense operations. Participants gain the skills needed to create, execute, and evaluate all-encompassing safety programs in aviation and defense, cultivate a culture of ongoing safety enhancement, and certify that people, assets, and missions function with the least risk possible while fulfilling regulatory and operational safety standards and requirements. At the end of the program, participants manage and mitigate risk during all phases of a mission.Learning Outcomes

- Ability to identify and assess workplace hazards: Upon completion of the CSO program, you will have the skills to identify potential hazards in the workplace and assess their level of risk.
- Knowledge of safety management systems: The CSO program covers the principles and practices of safety management systems, including how to develop, implement, and maintain them.
- Understanding of incident investigation and analysis: You will learn how to conduct effective investigations into workplace incidents, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
- Knowledge of emergency response planning: The CSO program covers the principles and practices of emergency response planning, including how to develop and implement effective emergency response plans for the workplace.
Mode of Delivery
Training sessions will be conducted through Microsoft Team Meetings in an online format, or through LMS or face-to-face delivery. Invitations for the meeting will be distributed one day before the commencement of the training program. Training is either delivered by an accredited training provider or an affiliate training center.

- Introduction to Occupational Safety and Health: Overview of OSH laws and regulations, identification of workplace hazards, risk assessment and control measures.
- Safety Management Systems: implementation of a safety management system, safety policies and procedures, auditing and review of safety performance.
- Fire Safety and Emergency Planning: Fire prevention and protection, emergency evacuation procedures, emergency response planning.
- Hazardous Materials and Waste Management: Identification and assessment of hazardous materials, safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste.
- Industrial Hygiene: Exposure assessment and control of chemical, physical, and biological hazards, indoor air quality and ventilation.
- Construction Safety: Site safety planning and management, scaffolding, excavation, and trenching safety, fall protection.
- Transportation Safety: Compliance with DOT regulations, vehicle and equipment maintenance, driver safety training.
- Incident Investigation and Reporting: Root cause analysis, incident reporting and documentation, implementation of corrective actions.
- Safety Training and Communication: Employee safety training and education, communication of safety information and policies, safety participation and involvement.
- Professional Development and Ethics: Continuous professional development, ethical considerations in safety management, current trends and best practices in safety management.
- Certification Preparation and Exam: Review of key concepts and principles, practice questions and mock exams, preparation for the certification exam.
Entry Requirements
Program Duration
This course is designed to help you reach your goals at your own pace and on your schedule. Instructional contact time must be a minimum of 8 hours. Most students intend to complete their studies via online learning within 1 month.
Examination
All students must achieve a minimum 70% score to successfully pass the examination which shall be taken online through AISP assigned portal. After successful completion of the examination, students will get their results immediately on their registered emails. This is an open-book exam and students are permitted to use a separate browser window to review course content while taking the exam. If you do not pass the examination you may retake the examination. Students are allowed to take an exam three times within one month. During this time, students should review the course material to improve their understanding.
