Course Overview
The Safe Scaffold Erection and Inspection course provided by the American Institute of Safety Professionals (AMIOSP) focuses on scaffold design and construction, and safety requirements per OSHA Standard §1926.451. Thid course assures the learner knowledge of the stability, strength and safety of scaffolds in construction and industrial use. The learner will be taught the capacity requirements which state that every scaffold and its components must withstand four times the greatest intended load. The program explains the significance of qualified design, appropriate connections, counterweights and suspension ropes which must have load ratios to keep a structure from tipping and collapsing. The learner will understand scaffold platform construction which includes full planking or decking between uprights and guardrail supports, and closed gaps to minimize falls. The course focuses on competent persons which includes the inspection and supervision of scaffolds, assuring the safety of OSHA regulations and identifying use hazards prior to construction. Compliance guidelines and practical examples will provide the learner the necessary skills to safely erect, inspect and maintain scaffolding systems. When participants complete this training, they will know how to assess scaffold integrity, manage and assess scaffold loads, and incorporate safety measures to protect workers when scaffolds are being erected, used, or dismantled. This training will minimize risk during scaffold operations and help since workers will know the regulatory requirements.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing the Safe Scaffold Erection and Inspection program, participants will be able to:
  • Understand OSHA and industry standards for safe scaffold erection, use, and inspection in construction and industrial settings.
  • Identify types of scaffolds, components, and load capacities, and recognize potential hazards associated with scaffold use.
  • Apply proper procedures for scaffold assembly, stabilization, and dismantling to prevent falls, collapses, and other accidents.
  • Conduct pre-use inspections and routine safety checks to ensure scaffolds are safe for work activities.
  • Recognize high-risk conditions such as uneven surfaces, improper bracing, overloaded platforms, and adverse weather effects.
  • Implement control measures including guardrails, personal fall arrest systems (PFAS), and safe access routes to protect workers.
  • Understand the responsibilities of scaffold erectors, inspectors, supervisors, and workers in maintaining scaffold safety.
  • Document inspections, hazards, and corrective actions to comply with OSHA recordkeeping and reporting requirements.
  • Communicate scaffold safety procedures effectively to team members, contractors, and management.
