Course Overview
The Stairways and Ladders Safety course offered by the American Institute of Safety Professionals covers the OSHA standard §1926.1050 and describes the safe use, construction, and maintenance of stairways and ladders during construction, alteration, repair, and demolition activities. This training also articulates how improperly used or defective ladders and stairways are leading causes of falls and injuries at a workplace. Course participants state the requirements for when ladders and stairways are needed, the difference between fixed, portable and job-made ladders, and the structural integrity standards to be maintained under maximum intended loads. The course teaches vital definitions such as “cleat,” “handrail,” and “point of access,” and assists learners in standards of the installation and use of stairways and ladders. They also explain when additional rules apply to stairways and ladders, for example; used with scaffolds ladders under Subpart L of the OSHA standards and equipment ladders under Subpart CC. This training enables workers and supervisors to inspect, identify hazards, and maintain ladders and stairways to protect against failures, slips, or falls. After finishing the course, participants will be able to practice OSHA standards when accessing elevated working areas, which would allow them to promote safer construction practices.
