Course Overview
The Respiratory Protection course offered by the American Institute of Safety Professionals covers the principles of protective equipment and their selection, usage, and maintenance abiding by OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.134, NIOSH certification, and ANSI/ASSE Z88.2-2015. This program equips the participants to identify workplace hazards like airborne particulates, gases, vapors, biological contaminants, and assess their exposure level using the industrial hygiene exposure assessment principles. They become proficient in formulating and putting into action a complete respiratory protection program consisting of a protection written program, medical evaluation, fit testing and maintenance training, and overall training of the respirators. This course trains participants on the selection of the right air-purifying respirators, supplied-air respirators, self-contained breathing apparatuses, and SCBAs based on the specific hazards, concentration, and exposure time, which is one of the most critical components of the course. In the course, participants are offered details on emergency procedures like oxygen-deficient situations and the high-risk industrial activities in confined spaces, as well as the protection principles in the laws and regulations. Participants practice put on and off, clean and store, and fit testing (both qualitative and quantitative) of the respirators. This course integrates the best practices in research, standard practices, and loss control in compliance, which equips participants to control respiratory hazards as per OSHA standards. At the end of the program, professionals gain the skills necessary to oversee respiratory protection programs designed to reduce the risk of job-related illnesses. These programs help improve the safety culture of an organization and bolster its resilience in the presence of airborne hazards.
