Course Overview
The course on ""The Handling, Storage, Use, and Disposal of Materials Safety"" offered by the American Institute of Safety Professionals helps to better understand and internalize OSHA Standard §1910.176. OSHA Standard §1910.176 deals with the general requirements for the safe handling and storage of materials within a workplace setting. This course explains the safe use of mechanical equipment and how to ensure aisles, doorways, and passageways are unobstructed, appropriately marked, and cleared of obstructions. This helps to avoid potential accidents. The learners are taught safe storage techniques and the importance of stacking, blocking, and interlocking materials to avoid sliding, toppling, collapsing, and falling; inappropriate stack heights result in instability hazards. The training identifies basic housekeeping practices, to eliminate tripping, fire, explosion, and pest access hazards, and explains the importance of storage area and vegetation control in pest control. The course explains limits of clearance, warning systems, and low-clearance hazards. Learners understand how to use derails and bumper blocks to prevent accidents with rolling railroad cars. The module identifies mandatory safety measures to control access and guard open pits, tanks, and ditches, to prevent falls. Using practical examples and compliance guidelines, the course trains learners on implementing safe systems of material handling, evaluating risks within storage areas, and the practice of OSHA compliance in all handling processes. At the end of the course, students will be able to reduce the risks and hazards of improper material handling and storage, which will enhance safety performance and improve operational effectiveness.
